“Weapons” Plot: When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance!
Who’s There???
I would love to say that no one is entirely to blame for the shortcomings of this film, but it bears a notable resemblance to another movie you might be familiar with—”Together.” While I can’t outright label “Weapons” as a total waste of time or as absurd as “Together,” it did come across as rather foolish, to say the least.
First and foremost, the title “Weapons” has absolutely no connection to the film’s content. Given the name, one might expect to encounter some form of weaponry or a significant event that would explain the title’s relevance. Unfortunately, that expectation is entirely unmet. Contrary to what many have touted, this is NOT the horror film that it was marketed to be.
Justine Gandy
Ms. Gandy was not just a teacher; she was a vital friend to her students, particularly those who were genuinely struggling and in need of someone to confide in. She was unwavering in her support, always ready to uplift and encourage them. Her commitment to her role was remarkable; she often challenged conventional boundaries and norms. However, despite her dedication and good intentions, her personal life was chaotic and disorganized. It was evident that she had two starkly different sides to her personality. Anyone in her position would feel the pressure, yet she took decisive action to regain control of her circumstances. This contrast is precisely where the title of the film gains its powerful symbolic significance.
Horror or Comedy
I found myself contemplating the genre of this film as it unfolded. The opening scene, with a dark screen and a little girl’s voice, effectively set the mood. However, as the film transitioned into different chapters told from various characters’ perspectives, I struggled with that storytelling approach. It felt reminiscent of other films that employed a similar structure, which made it difficult for me to follow the narrative. I could see how some viewers might appreciate the complexity, but I felt lost at times.
Additionally, some moments struck me as quite absurd, leading me to question the film’s classification as horror. I found myself laughing at situations that seemed more ridiculous than frightening. Understandably, film preferences vary widely, but I believe the film’s title could be reconsidered, as it may not accurately reflect its content. Overall, while the film had potential, it could benefit from a clearer narrative style and a more fitting title.
The Let Down of It All
The promotional campaign for “Weapons” was executed exceptionally well, leading viewers to anticipate a thrilling and terrifying experience. However, the film is severely lacking in the horror elements that audiences were led to expect. The most disheartening aspect is that the filmmakers claimed the story was inspired by true events, yet it does not represent any actual true story. This contradiction leaves a bitter taste and adds to my disappointment regarding the film’s execution and overall purpose.
