Austin: The Shrewd & Unbreakable Boy
I want to take a moment to discuss the remarkable story of Austin. He was not just an autistic child; he embodied resilience, cheerfulness, and an extraordinary spirit that left a lasting impact on everyone around him. It is truly remarkable to consider the influence he had, especially since this narrative is drawn from real-life events depicted in a film.
I firmly believe that every child living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) should have the opportunity to see this film. Moreover, I urge teachers and healthcare clinics around the globe to arrange viewings for their children, as the movie offers a profoundly inspirational and welcoming message.

The title “The Unbreakable Boy” carries significant meaning. It refers not only to Austin’s struggles with Brittle Bone Disease but also emphasizes his indomitable spirit. Despite facing challenges that could easily discourage many—such as fragile bones and the complexities of autism—Austin showcased an unwavering strength that inspired his parents. He demonstrated that life, filled with both difficulties and joys, could be not just manageable but also enriching. Rather than seeking to change him, his parents learned invaluable lessons from his outlook on life and his ability to find joy despite his struggles. This shift in perspective is incredibly uplifting and highlights the profound wisdom that children like Austin can impart to those around them.
The School Mascot Pause
In the film, there’s a powerful scene where Austin is at a school game, proudly serving as the mascot in the gym. As someone with autism, his emotions are often complex; he experiences happiness when he feels sad and vice versa. While this understanding may not resonate with his parents or others, it’s perfectly valid. Without a moment’s hesitation, his father steps in to support him by putting on the mascot’s head and performing in his place. This act instantly boosts Austin’s spirits. Throughout the film, Austin expresses a strong desire for his father to truly “see him” as he is, rather than attempting to “change him or fix him.”
The Unbreakable Moves Forward
As the film draws to a close, it vividly portrays the lives of the characters, capturing the passage of time and the ways they have evolved. When it turned to Austin, I felt a wave of emotion wash over me—I couldn’t help but tear up. It was profoundly moving to see that, although life presented him with challenges, he hadn’t changed in spirit or allowed his condition to define him. With determination and resilience, he pursued a college education. His parents remained a solid pillar of support, still together after all these years. Meanwhile, his brother maintained an unexpected friendship with someone who had once bullied both him and Austin, showcasing the capacity for growth and forgiveness. It was breathtaking to witness this journey. Austin truly embodies the phrase “an unbreakable boy,” a testament to the strength of the human spirit.
Never even heard of this one, but it sounds more like a movie for streaming! I do love movies bringing more awareness to autism because I think it’s a field still so many don’t understand!
Wow, really? I’m surprised that you haven’t heard of this movie, Joshua! Honestly, you are almost always privy to just about every movie that comes into theaters, streaming, or anywhere else. You’re right – most are not even aware of what autism is or anything.
