“Materialists” Plot: A matchmaker’s (Dakota Johnson) lucrative business is complicated when she falls into a toxic love triangle that threatens her clients!
Report Card Grade & Review
What Are You Doing At The Singles’ Table, Mister?
In the realm of materialism, it is quite clear what defines materialists, who they tend to attract, and the reasons behind these attractions. Materialists prioritize superficial attributes when seeking partners, such as physical appearance, financial wealth, social status, age, height, gender, and income. This focus often overshadows the qualities that truly matter in a deep and meaningful relationship.
By fixating on material possessions and societal markers of success, a person may inadvertently signal their insecurities and desires for stability rather than genuine emotional connection. This mindset often suggests they are not searching for real companionship or love, but rather for a partner who offers financial security—someone who can provide a comfortable lifestyle, thus allowing them to prioritize material comforts over personal growth and emotional intimacy. True love is founded on mutual respect, shared values, and genuine understanding, rather than a transactional pursuit driven by wealth or status.
Coke & Beer
This scene was, without a doubt, the standout moment in the entire film. The chemistry between Pedro Pascal and Dakota Johnson was strikingly magical and flawlessly executed, creating a palpable tension that drew the audience in. As Lucy, portrayed by Johnson, sat at her table alone, she radiated confidence, believing she had all the cards in her hand and was orchestrating every moment. However, when her drink finally arrived, her expression shifted dramatically. The look of shock and disbelief in her eyes was truly priceless, as she realized that something oddly unexpected accompanied her order. With her mouth agape in surprise, Lucy’s carefully constructed facade of control shattered in that instant, making the moment not only entertaining but also deeply revealing of her character’s vulnerability. This unexpected twist added layers to the narrative and showcased the outstanding performances of both actors.
John & Harry
One of these men possesses a truly noble spirit, radiating sincerity and warmth, while the other mirrors Lucy’s pragmatic outlook on life. Is that what you’re considering? It’s a possibility, but I won’t divulge too much. As for whether the film follows a predictable path, I’ll leave that question hanging; it’s something that becomes clear when you take in the broader narrative.
What I can share is this: both men are deeply in love with Lucy, disregarding the societal barriers of status and class. Their sole focus is her happiness, and they aspire to provide her with the richest, most fulfilling life. Ultimately, the decision lies in Lucy’s hands—will she choose to fight for her own destiny, or will she resign herself to being defined by the title of this movie? I’ll let you ponder that.
Finding Your Inner Love For Yourself to Find …”That One!”
In closing, materialists are individuals who place excessive importance on external, materialistic traits over the intrinsic qualities that reveal a person’s true character. It’s a common refrain to hear, “You worry too much about material things in life,” which echoes this sentiment. Why invest your energy in evaluating someone’s financial standing or the car they drive? When it comes to the complexities of love, these factors should hold little significance.
This movie really suprised me…. great performances all around….
The movie was really …. something, but it wasn’t something that I would say moved – or even inspired me.
I totally agree with your grade of a “B.” – and that’s actually a stretch for me because it was no where near her first movie, “Past Lives!” Most parts were very predictable, and it was advertised like a rom – com and it wasn’t that in my opinion.
No way! It DEFINITELY wasn’t a romantic comedy … that’s for sure! I kept waiting for a huge twist with the man who was abusing his date …. but that never did come! I have never heard of her in a movie called Past Lives!
I’m always down for Dakota. I like your narrative on this one. I am engrossed, and will see it!
I’m rather perplexed by Dakota to be completely honest with you – not her acting capabilites … but her as a person like if I were to run across her and meet her, she seems like the “uppity” type of celeb to me and I hate those. I think that about her EVERY time I watch a movie she is in & I can’t help it. Do you get that vibe about her? At all?
LOL! Now that you mentioned that, it makes sense …
What? About Dakota being a snotty brat or an uppity lil chica?
The review was on point, and allowed me to reach deeper for its meaning. It was a little slow for me. I love Chris Evans! I’d rather see him as Captain America – but oh well he did good. I wanted to see Sophie with Bryan (hope that was his name), I think they would have made a good match!!
Thank you for reading my review – and as far as Sophie is concerned … are u saying you think she would have been better off with Harry, who was played by Pedro Pascal?
