“HIM” Plot: A young athlete, Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers), descends into a world of terror when he’s invited to train with a legendary champion, Isiah White (Marlon Wayans), whose charisma curdles into something darker.
HIM: What a letdown! lawd!!!
This film was a significant letdown, especially considering the excitement it sparked among millions of viewers who were anticipating a thrilling blend of mystery, intrigue, and potentially compelling horror. With Jordan Peele’s name attached to the project, expectations were understandably high. However, it’s crucial to clarify that Peele was only the producer and did not write the screenplay.
As I sat through the entire film of HIM, I constantly found myself hoping for a moment where the narrative would click into place or where something engaging or suspenseful would unfold. Unfortunately, I was met with an experience that was not only disappointing but also bewildering. The plot was an intricate web of convoluted storylines and cryptic messages that left me struggling to understand or follow the characters’ motivations and actions.
Show Me!!!
Despite Peele’s renowned ability to craft social commentary within the horror genre, this film seemed to take a surreal detour into a confusing landscape that felt far removed from his previous successes. It bore his stylistic trademarks—intriguing visuals and an atmosphere thick with tension—but ultimately fell flat in its execution.
To be brutally honest, watching it was more of a chore than a thrill. I can’t shake the feeling that Peele might have consciously distanced himself from the project to protect his legacy, perhaps believing that this film would not resonate well with audiences. This raises the question: Did he want to tarnish director Justin Tipping’s reputation by allowing his name to lead the project? After all, Tipping was at the helm, but Peele’s influence loomed large over every scene.
Isaiah White vs. Cameron Cade
While this theory may be speculative, those who are familiar with Jordan Peele’s previous films, such as “Get Out” and “Us,” and who chose to stay until the very end of this latest offering might believe that it captures his more enigmatic and challenging approach to the horror genre. In this film, Peele intertwines social commentary with suspense, yet many viewers may find themselves grappling with the narrative’s complexity and ambiguity. Ultimately, the initial buzz and anticipation surrounding the film felt like a clever ruse, leaving a substantial portion of the audience feeling frustrated and unfulfilled by the conclusion. The film’s intricate themes and disjointed storytelling may have overshadowed its potential to resonate with viewers on a deeper level.
Show Me …HIM!!!
If you are waiting for “HIM” to arrive …. well, you will be sadly mistaken and waiting for a very long time because nothing will come of this film! You will walk out in the middle of it, or if you stay, you will fall asleep, and I would hate for you to pay money just to fall asleep, although people do go to the movies to do just that! I have nothing more to say about this tragedy that should not have been written, made, produced, filmed, streamed, or anything else!!!
Travis, thank you for sharing your Experience. How was Marlon Wayans acting in the movie? Do you think if the movie had a different cast it would be better? Different Director or Writer?
Honestly, NO nothing at all would have changed my opinion of it. Marlon did an excellent job – and that is the ONLY good praise that I will give both “him” and HIM! PUN IS SO INTENDED HERE!
I enjoyed reading your review. I’m totally not going to the theater to see this after reading your review.
Good decision to make! I will ALWAYS be honest and TRUTHFUL here on my website – and above all else, SPOILER-FREE!!! Yippee!!!
It WAS such a chore to watch! Let it alone!!! Staying ’till the very end was a chore!!!
What do you mean – stay ’till the very end?
You gave it a big fat “F!” That means I will catch it streaming -or maybe not at all. That’s too bad because I like Marlon Wayans.
Everyone makes flops – but this was bad! Really, really, really, REALLY bad!
Damn, what a letdown. This made me sad, and I love the Waynes brothers.
I get it, but it really speaks volumes that Marlon chose to share a list of his past films from Rotten Tomatoes on Facebook, explicitly stating that he doesn’t consider critics’ reviews important. Some of those films, like “Scary Movie” and “White Chicks,” are actually our favorites. For him to make such a bold public statement on social media indicates he believes the situation is truly alarming!
